Have you ever heard of the so-called portion size effect? It goes without saying that we will easily overeat if the portion in front of us is too big, and therefore makes it hard to eat less and lose weight. This is because It can be hard to feel a sense of satisfaction when food is still on the plate.
The effect has previously been demonstrated by a study that at the same time trained the participants to be better at managing their portion sizes.
Now the research has been followed up by a graduate from Pennsylvania State University called Faris Zuraikat. He wanted to investigate whether the trained participants from the original study would respond differently to changing portion sizes compared to people who had not received the same training.
The three groups were served the same food but varied in portion size, and the trial showed that the trained participants more and more chose to eat more of the calorie diet compared to the uncontrolled control groups. For example, they ate a lot of vegetables and less garlic bread, resulting in a much lower calorie intake – and in the long term can cause weight loss.
“The survey contains the assumption that smaller amounts of calorie foods, as well as a larger amount of nutritious and calorie foods, help control hunger feeling while taking fewer calories,” explains Barbara Rolls, who helped to complete the study, and continues:
“You may want a full plate with a top as long as the foods contain good nutrients.”
